ELA
In Language Arts this week we are exploring characterization and point of view. Several mini-lessons each week are designed to prepare students for material on the February DCAS which may not have been covered in-depth yet this year. Close reading, note taking, and test taking strategies will be practiced.

Week of November 12th
This week in ELA instruction is focused on structure for expository text. There is a short quiz tomorrow on the 5 structures. Students may use their graphic organizer on the quiz. Next week we will discuss finding the theme and central idea. Monday and Tuesday before break will be used for a summative assessment of Text Analysis (RL 6.1 and RI6.1), Theme or Central Idea (RL6.2 and RI6.2), Literary Elements(RL6.3) and Text Structure (RI 6.5 and RL6.5). Please continue to encourage students to read and respond at least 4 nights a week in their reading journal. We will be sharing these on Thursday. Students will be receiving a clarification document for the response topics and will be gluing it into their journal. Have a great week!
WEek of October 15th
ELA Reading logs have been distributed to all Blue Six students. Each student has also been given a composition notebook for journal responses. The reading expectation at this point in the year is that each student read a minimum of twenty minutes a night at least 4 nights a week and respond in writing for 10 minutes after reading. Please ask your child to show you the reading log/book mark. There are suggested topics for the written response and there is a square for parent initials as reading/journaling is completed. Additionally you will see the Independent Reading Standards for 6th grade and a rubric which we will use to review student journal entries weekly. Please help remind your child that this is an essential part of their homework. Research show that the best way to improve reading achievement is to READ! Thank you for your support.
Week of September 23rd
This week in language arts students continue to practice finding textual evidence for information explicitly stated and inferred while reading a nonfiction passage called, The Silk Road. Students can choose to work in "Best Fit" Centers which means they have an opportunity to choose to work with a teacher, a partner, or solo for "close reading."
Close reading strategies include rereading, analyzing, note taking, highlighting.
Students will be receiving a reading log as soon as all Content 2 classrooms have visited the library.
Blue 6 students will take the Reading DCAS during their ELA classes next week.
